June 2003 Meeting notes
June 27, 2003 Meeting Notes
Speaker: Emia Lochery and Tiffiny Holder
These young ladies graduated from Campbell High School last year. They made the decision
to take a year off before they started college to take part in Africa & Asia Adventure. Through
this program they became teachers in Botswana in a primary school for a year. Botswana was formally
part of South Africa. They are a relatively wealthy country because of the discovery of
diamonds. Their other primary industry is tourism. Approximately 90% of the country is Christian. The principle
obstacle for progress and growth in this southern African country is that 1 in 3 people are infected with
HIV AIDS.
Emia and Tiffiny were the only 2 out of 18 young people in the Africa & Asia Adventure program to come from
American schools. The other participants were from England, Scotland and Ireland. These
young people were paired with a teacher in the primary school in the village. They also
lived in the village in the neighborhood that their students lived in which gave them a unique opportunity
to learn about the culture and way of life. Their primary course of instruction was English. However,
they also taught other courses from science to the history of Botswana. The class size
was approximately 32 students. The students had to clean their own classrooms. They
started a theater group which helped the children learn English and also self-esteem. The
country has made a large effort to improve education. However, they did it from the top
down and the primary grades have been the last to get this reform. They stated that they
had plenty of supplies, however, they were not being used.
Once the school year was over the young ladies had an opportunity to tour the country.
Their primary mode of transportation in Botswana was hitchhiking and they said they felt perfectly
safe. They had some fantastic pictures to share with the club, however, their most lasting memories
will be of their students, some of which still correspond.

Positive Side of Life
- Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the
sun every year.
- How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door your standing on.
- Birthdays are good for you; the more you have, the longer you live.
- Happiness comes through doors you didn't even know you left open.
- You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.
- Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.
- Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.
- A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

This summer he teaches the Marietta/Cobb Driver's Education course offered through the Marietta Community Schools. The program is one of the largest is the state offering 30 hours of classroom training and 6 hours of one-on-one in car driving instruction. This is the requirement mandated by Georgia law. The courses are offered at various Cobb County High Schools. Parents are a role model for stopping at stop signs, speeding and yielding the right of way. Auto accidents are the leading cause of death in teen-agers. Georgia has a graduated drivers license according to the driver's age.

A Church Story
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the flyer of the church. It was covered in names and small American flags were mounted on either side of them. The seven year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the Pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, "Good morning, Alex."
"Good morning, Pastor," replied the boy, still focused on the plaque. "Pastor, what is this?"
"Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service."
Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex's voice was barely audible, trembling with fear, when he asked, "Which service, the 8:15 or the 10:45.

June 13, 2003 Meeting Notes
Speaker: Tad Huddgens
Buddy Wages introduced Tad who is the Director of Marketing for AirTran Airlines. AirTran Airlines is now 10 years old. They are the 12th largest airline in the nation and the second largest in Atlanta. AirTran flies Boeing 717s.
Tad feels that there will be a further shakeout in the airline industry due to too much capacity (eg 6 airlines in the midwest operate 9 central hubs). Before September 11, 2001, there were more than 750,000 employees in the industry. Now that number is 500,000. Industry losses are still growing at $900 million this year alone. AirTran has continued to thrive even in this environment. They have added 34 new routes and grown from 3800 employees to 5400. They have taken delivery of 43 new airplanes in the past two years -- more than any other airline.
He attributes their growth and prosperity to their redefining service in the industry. They fly at an average occupancy of 73% with an average turnaround of their airplanes on the ground of 25 minutes. They feel this along with more aggressive work rules have kept their cost down (average 8.3 cents per passenger mile) and profitability up. They have, however, maintained quality, evidenced by receiving the FAA Diamond Award - the highest achievement for excellence.
