March 28, 2003 Meeting Notes
Speaker: Pete Wood
Harold Smith introduced Councilman Pete Wood who has been in Smyrna politics since his father was a Smyrna city councilman. His first official office was when our own Harold Smith, then mayor, appointed him to the city appraisers office. Councilman Wood spoke of the growth in Smyrna of 10,000 people between 1990 and 2000, and the plans that the city officials have for further development. The council has just finished reapportionment of the seven wards which make up the city. They have created a Revitalization authority and a Redevelopment task force to help in moving the city forward. In a recent visit to the nation's capitol they made several requests for funding to the congressional delegation from Georgia. These ranged from money to redevelop the 10 acres of the Brawner property to side walks and liner parks all to improve the quality of life for the Smyrna residents. Finally he announced that the last restaurant in the market village was open and that the development of phase 2 will soon be under way.

Brian Cooper introduced our own Curt Johnston as a member of the Cobb County Board of Education. He has been elected to the school board in 97, 98, and 2002. He was President of the Smyrna Optimist Club in 1988. Cobb County schools now serve 100,000 students and has a budget approaching a trillion dollars, or about $7,000 per student. Next year the school system will not receive any money from the lottery, all of that money will be for pre-k and college.
Low standardized tests scores are related to truancies, poverty and foreign language speakers. Factors influencing school performance are related to outside influences of not doing homework, television, part-time jobs, extra curricular activities, socializing with friends, excessive absences, the quality and quantity of reading matter in the home and the number of parents in the home. The important question is how did my child do on standardized testing?
