May 2003 Meeting notes
May 30, 2003 Meeting Notes
Speaker: Doug Stoner
Doug is the freshman State Representative for District 34 Post I. He is truly a product of Smyrna and Cob County graduate of Campbell High School and Kennesaw State University. He has been married to his wife Della for 12 years and they have two children. He is a third generation business owner in Cobb County. Over the years he has served in many civic boards and authorities with an emphasis toward transportation and urban development. His background has prepared him well for his service in the stat house of representatives. He serves on the Public Utilities and Telecommunications, Banks and Banking, Governmental Affairs, Joint House and Senate Oversigt Committee for the Georgia Rail Passenger Authority, and Chairman of the Transportation Committee of the Metro Democratic Caucus.
District 34 is one of the newly created multi-member Distracts and Smyrna makes up 83% of his District. He said that he was not at a disadvantage being a freshman because with all of the changes in state with the last election it was almost as if everyone was a freshman. These changes combined with a budget deficit of 400 million to 600 million made for th e longest session in the history of Georgia. He sponsored House Bill 316 which will help local authorities do complete background checks on people who are working with our youth. The way the law was written you could only check on the person's background in Georgia. The new bill will coordinate with the FBI so a complete check can be done.
Doug feels there will probably be a special session this year because of the projected budget deficit and the effect of the new tax cut bill passed by Congress.
