Respect for Law Day
Betty Turley introduced several local law enforcement officials as well as Sam Olens,
Commission Chair; Joe Thompson, Commissioner; Judge Ken Nix; Bill warren; and Linda Coker. Smyrna
Police Chief Stan Hook introduced many of Smyrna's finest officers who
were present for a wonderful breakfast prepared by chef Amir of Cafe Michel.
Harold Smith read a proclamation by the Mayor of the City of Smyrna which in part
reads: "Whereas the Smyrna Optimist Club and its members continue to sponsor and support
programs aimed at combating crime and disrespect for the law through year-round efforts: NOW I, A. Max
Bacon, Mayor of the City of Smyrna do proclaim May 2-8, 2004 as Respect for Law Week and ask all citizens
of Smyrna and surrounding area to join with the Smyrna Optimists in carrying
the message of Respect for Law to everyone, and by example, exercise responsible
citizenship." You may see the entire proclamation in the Club scrapbook.
Betty then introduced our speaker, Sheriff neal Warren, a former Optimist Club member who
acknowledged our club's activities with youth which have benefited the community.
Sheriff Warren compared law enforcement of 30 years ago to the challenge of police
work today stating that the lack of respect for the law and enforcement
makes their jobs much more difficult.
Currently there are 2300 inmates in the county detention center and 47,000 in the
state prison system. He voiced his concern of the growing crime rate of the nation as 6-7
million people are either in prison, on parole or probation. he encouraged us all to
show our respect for the law by always obeying traffic laws because our example is the best teacher.
He also reminded us that it really does take a village to raise a child and to continue
to stay involved with the children and youth of our
community to supplement their lack of parenting.
Betty presented a plaque of Appreciation to the Smyrna Police Department.
