November 2003 Meeting notes
November 21, 2003 Meeting Notes
Speaker: Far Farley
Gary introduced Far Farley who spoke to the club about identity theft. Far's business specializes
in helping small businesses with pre-paid legal services, data management, and other small
business needs. He lives in Smyrna with his wife and 2 year old.
Identity theft is a growing and very damaging crime. Someone can access your personal
information easily and cause financial problems for years. Law enforcement has a hard time prosecuting
because of the difficulty in ascertaining the true identity of the individuals involved.
The information used to steal one's identity is: Social Security number, date of birth,
and mother's maiden name. Your zip code is also an important piece of information for identity
thieves. Of course, thieves love to have your credit card number and expiration date as well as
the CVV2 # on the back of the card. If at all possible, do not let someone take your card
out of sight for processing.
Things to do to help prevent identity theft:
- shred any papers with your name on them
- check your credit report regularly
- know what's in your wallet and minimize the information you carry with you
- do NOT carry your social security card and minimize the number of people you give it to
- know the people you give important information to
There is even "Identity Recover" insurance that will cover your legal defense fees in case you
arrested because of someone committing a crime while using your identity.
Let's all run out and purchase shredders while remaining optimistic about our world!
A Kind Word or Smile
- Always be ready
- With a kind word or smile,
- For whatever the season,
- They're always in style,
- They can do wonders
- Where medicine's failed
- To uplift the lonely
- The sick and the frail.
- Whenever through kindness
- You show that you care,
- That rough road seems smoother
- For those treading there.
